Daddy’s Girl

Charlotte is now just over 21 weeks old, and it will be another 16-20 weeks before we get to officially meet her. But the time is quickly running out! The closer we get, the more real it becomes. We are beginning to see little bits of her personality (and maybe not, but I like to think so). She doesn’t like loud noises, she prefers women’s voices to men’s, and she LOVES her daddy. A couple of weeks ago, he was gone for about 4 days. During those 4 days, she was extremely still, hardly moving at all. As soon as he got home and she heard his voice, she went back to her constant flips and tumbles! He was singing to her the other night, and she started dancing, it was awesome.

I have never had children, so I really don’t know what it is like to be a mother, but I think I have a pretty good image of what a mom is because my mom is awesome. But dad’s are another story. My birth father left our family when I was only 3 or 4 years old. My mom married my “step father” when I was 9. At first that was a really rough situation … I’ll be honest, I was pretty much a spoiled brat who made life way worse than it had to be. But as I got older, I began to realize the difference between a “father” and a “dad”. My father will always be my father, simply by virtue of my DNA. But Jim really became my “dad”. He was the one that took me to father-daughter square dancing (okay, it was once), came to my school events, took me on “dates”, celebrated my birthday, and made my Christmas’ special. And while he’s been a great dad, I wonder what it will be like to see Charlotte with her father. What will she inherit from him? Will she look like him? Act like him? Talk like him? Sing silly songs like him? Its going to be an interesting experience learning this Father-Daughter relationship …

At Last!

My college roommate, Megan Dixon FINALLY got married this weekend. I say FINALLY because she was with Daniel for 6 1/2 years! The wedding was absolutely beautiful, as only Megan Dixon could do! It was held at the Prestonwood Country Club. There was probably about 150-200 people there … of which I knew like 5 people. Our old friend Carter was there, so it was awesome to spend the evening catching up with him. I got to see me and Meg’s other roomie, Jen. I hadn’t seen her since graduation, so that was cool. I also got to see Meg’s old suite mate and friend Corey. She’s now doing the “starving artist” gig in New York, living in Harlem and working at a restaurant. She’s gonna make it big someday, I just know it. We got to take some cool stuff home from the wedding as favors, like Rock Candy (mmm), and a really great CD of all the songs from the reception. Meg and Daniel’s first dance was to a song by John Legend called “Stay with You”

I had never heard this song before, but I absolutely LOVE it. And of course the CD ends with “Let’s Get It On” by Marvin Gaye. So they are off on their honeymoon at a little cabin in the middle of nowhere. Congrats guys, I love you both so very much!

Life Is A Game

when i was in high school, i had a friend who would always play a game called “I Win”. he would say, “let’s play a game”, and I would always stupidly ask, “what game?”, he’d say “I Win”, then shout “I WIN!!”. apparently the first person to say “I Win” won.

pastor steve started a new series today about our Authority in Christ. he talked today about how it doesn’t matter what the circumstance is, we win. as humans we tend to look at everything and judge how “strong” it is (could be the reason guys are always doing silly things). but as Christians, we have authority, and power no longer matters. Goliath was stronger than David … but who won? the Red Sea was stronger than Moses … but who crossed who? when you get pulled over by a cop, it doesn’t matter if you could bench press him, he wins … because he has the authority. in Luke 10:19, Jesus gave us AUTHORITY over the POWER of the enemy. so stop trying to fight the things in your life, get out of the ring, look back and yell “I Win!!”

life is a game … and it’s called I Win!

Battle of the Sexes

we are at 18 (almost 19) weeks in the pregnancy. we went yesterday for the ultrasound to find out if we were having a boy or a girl. before we got into the doctor’s office, we had a little talk with the baby and reminded “it” that the Bible says that children who obey their parents live a long life, so “it” better obey us and show us what “it’s” got! we invited our parents to the appointment. they didn’t do ultrasounds when we were born, so none of them had ever seen one. of course, jamie’s mom got there an hour early (she’s so cute, she wanted to make sure she wasn’t late and wasn’t sure where the office was). by the time we got there, both our moms were waiting for us, and not too long after we got there, my dad rolled into the parking lot. jamie and i went in first, they had to get things set up and we wanted to know before our parents did what we were having. after they told us and finished some necessary measurements, we called our parents into the room.

our moms just about ran over my dad to get into the room (but don’t let him fool you, he was almost as giggly as they were, he just hides it better). so they got in there, and the doctor gave them the “tour” …

after they got acquainted with what they were looking at, we introduced them to their GRANDDAUGHTER, CHARLOTTE ELIZABETH. That’s right, ladies and gents, we are having a girl!! now jamie gets to figure out how to raise a little girl, he’s already contemplating how many guns it will take to intimidate all the boys that could possibly go after our sweet little girl. the girls now out number the guys in the Tobler house … haha.

the stuff of Nightmares!

when i was 3, i was living in Alabama with my mother, sister, and brother. my dad had just left, though he came to visit occassionally. on one such visit, something utterly traumatic happened. little did we know, we had a family of flying squirrels living in our attic. on that evening, one of their babies found its way into the house. my sister woke up to this creature jumping on her. she flipped out and ran out of the room, leaving me, her helpless little 3 year old sister in there to fend for myself. well i have always been a very heavy sleeper, and her screams only served to slowly bring me out of sleeping. as my eyes adjusted to the darkness, i looked across the room and then i saw them. the beady eyes of the squirrel, staring straight at me. i screamed and went running out of the room. i found my sister on top of the coffee table in the living room, where my dad was sleeping. so i joined her on top of the table, and we both commenced dancing and screaming about the critter that was going to get us. my dad woke up, and went to go find the squirrel. he chased it around the house with a broom, to no avail. so my mom called her friend, who worked for the Park System, who came over with a trap to get rid of the beast. it took 2 days to catch that stupid thing. so, needless to say, big scary eyes really freak me out…

yesterday, during our Executive Committee meeting, i had my IM open so that the office could reach me if needed. at the bottom of the IM box, there are ads that scroll across, and this one was staring at me all day …

so, speaking of nightmares, apparently pregnant women have really strange dreams, and i think i win the competition of “weirdest”. lets just say it involved, hot air balloons, penquins, black paint, rope ladders, weasels, cereal, ocean rats, and Costa Rica… strange.

college days

i’ve heard that everyone is only 7 people away from knowing someone famous. like you have a friend who knows a guy whose third cousin worked for a lady who knows the sister of the President, or something like that. well, i have a famous friend.

in college, i had a roommate named Jen DeMinco. she lived with me and another girl named Amanda during her senior year, which was my sophmore/junior year (its a long story). she was majoring in music theater and wanted to move to LA to try and “make it”. after graduation, she did just that. last time i talked to her, which was a couple of years ago, she was assisting a director who was directing a film starring Val Kilmer. she would tell me stories about walking the red carpet, trying not to look like an idiot in front of all the “mega stars”. i was watching tv the other day and saw an ad for the Screen Actors Guild award, which i knew she was a member of, which is what got me thinking about her again. so, being me, i decided to google her to see where she was.

she has a neat website, and if you look her up on the Internet Movie Database, you can see her resume. while she hasn’t landed any major roles yet, she is well on her way. she was a photo double and a stand in for Jessica Biel in Next and for the main chick in Mission Impossible 3.

she was a funny girl. some of the funniest things i remember about college involved her, like experimenting with different liquids trying to light the grill while avoiding going down the block to the store to buy lighter fluid … long story short, just go buy lighter fluid. or her friend that always said “really? really? i mean, really?”. or watching her get insulted by something and putting her hands on her hips and screaming “aaugh”. lol. oh the inside jokes that aren’t funny to anyone else.

so you should check out her website (click her name above), and go see her movies … she’s a great gal!
