a Sunday post

I don’t normally post on Sundays because I leave the house at 10am and don’t get back until 11pm.  Sundays are long days for us here in the Tobler house.  But today we didn’t have Sunday Night Prayer or Stage20, so I actually get to spend some time at home! And its a sleepy nap day with all the rain!

So here is the thought running through my head this Sunday.  Things have been “easy” so far with Charlotte.  Granted, the birth was long and I’m still dealing with some of the consequences/aftermath of it all.  But she has been an easy baby.  She sleeps really well, eats well, is happy 90% of the time, and is easy to calm down when she is unhappy.  But for the first time the other day I had to tell her “no”.  She isn’t a huge fan of her car seat.  I mean, who really wants to be strapped down and ride around facing backwards??  So when I put her in, she begins to squirm and cry.  I finally had enough and decided to try out telling her “no”.  She was happy and laughing until I set her in her car seat and begin to fasten the straps, then she lunged herself down and almost out of the seat.  I put her back and said “no” and started fastening the straps again.  She continued to fuss but didn’t try to escape.  I’ve had to do that several times since then, and I think she really gets it because she gives me this “fine, I’ll sit still, but I’m not gonna like it” look.

And all this made me realize… she’s gonna be moving around and growing up really soon.  I know that sounds stupid, but think about it.  Until now she has been totally immobile, dependent upon us for everything, and hasn’t had the ability to think and reason.  She is now able to think about something and do it (for the most part).  She lunges for things she wants, reaches her hands out and tries to grab things, and she is trying her hardest to wiggle across the floor.  She is starting to show that she has a mind of her own and can make decisions.  I say all that to say that my big question is … can I do this?

Will I really be able to mold her and guide her into the woman she can be and needs to be?  Can I handle the tantrums?  What will I do when she melts down in a public place? How can I make sure her determination is a good thing and is steered in the right direction? I guess this next phase is just like the one I’m coming out of … I need to read and take advantage of every resource I have, then sit back and let instincts take over.  Having done all, stand … that’s somewhere in the Bible.  I’m not sure it was meant for this particular situation, but I’m sure it applies!

So what did you do that best prepared you for the “older baby slash toddler” stage?

hey good lookin’, whatcha got cookin’

thanksgiving

Ain’t nobody got a sweeter dessert than this lil pumpkin pie!!

Cutest picture ever, I know. Watch out Anne Geddes! Well, we are back from Grandma Bailey’s (GiGi Bailey to Charlotte!) We had a great time.  Tons of food. And I mean tons.  OMW, Aunt Angie made this apple pie, but it had chocolate in it … sigh. Everyone fought over holding Charlotte, except when it came time for a diaper change, of course LOL.  Jamie and Patrick got up at 3am to start smoking the turkey (as seen above with Charlotte).  We played endless amounts of Wii games.  Argued about politics.  Listened to Jamie and Patrick play the piano and sing old hymns (video soon to be uploaded to YouTube!).  Watched in awe as Charlotte learned to laugh. As soon as I can capture that on video, I’ll upload it too.  It was a really great Thanksgiving.  Now the search begins for the perfect White Elephant gift for the Bailey Family Christmas. Any suggestions?

into the dark ages

As I sit here unshowered and in clothes I’ve worn for almost 2 days (that’s what I call Casual Wednesday!), I have a sad announcement. This will be my last post for a few days.  Despite how much I love Jamie’s grandma, her house is kinda still back in the dark ages … no internet.  (For goodness sake, they just got toilet #2 for the whole house!) So I can’t blog without the interweb! To hold you over until my next post, and to try to calm the riot that I’m sure will ensue by my not posting, here are some super cute pictures of Charlotte. Have a fantastically amazing Thanksgiving, and we’ll chat again on Monday!!

i heart gordan ramsey!

I have run out of shows on Hulu to watch (because most of them I watch with Jamie and therefore I am banned from watching them without him), so I turned to Kitchen Nightmares.  I’ve seen several shows, but today I realized that I really like this show.  As annoying as Chef Ramsey can be, (yes?), he is inspiring.  He is like Dog the Bounty Hunter of the kitchen world.  He will royaly piss you off and hunt you down for bad food, but in the end he will make you feel great about the changes you’ve made.  He may put you in handcuffs and beat you up, but he will give you a free counseling session in the backseat of his SUV.  (He does have quite a potty mouth though!)  Whenever I have to clean the kitchen, I watch an episode of Kitchen Nightmares online as I clean.  And Gordan inspired me to actually cook a for-real dinner.  Sure, veggies, rice, and chicken are real food, but they aren’t that challenging.  So tonight I am making baked potatoes, broiled balsamic vinegar marinaded steaks, grilled squash, and homemade apple dessert stuff (ugh, they smell soooo good)! I’ll let you know how they turned out.  So what fun things have you made lately?

a thought to start your week

**EDIT.  It occured to me that some of you don’t know John Daker. This is him.  Please watch this video, then you’ll understand the thought to start your week…

Thought To Start Your Week - Choose your friends wisely.  Otherwise you might end up with a group of friends like this …

And the second thought to start your week … don’t let your friends lie to you and tell you that you can sing.  John Daker, you can’t sing. Apparently I’m the only real friend John has.

the EXCITEMENT is in the air!

Can I tell you just how stinkin’ excited I am about Thanksgiving?? Every year we go down to Jacksonville, NC to visit Jamie’s family (the Bailey clan).  Okay, really its Verona, NC, but no one has ever heard of that.  Come to think of it, not many people have heard of Jacksonville, NC either… basically, we are going to the coast. Anyway, Thanksgiving at Grandma Bailey’s is the best thing on the entire planet!! Last year, we announced the pregnancy, and so it will be just so cool to have Charlotte with us this year.  Most of the family has met her, but she was still very twitchy-newborn, so it’ll be fun to have her interact with everyone.

Wanna know what else I’m excited about???

This.  Is it strange that this almost makes me cry? I nearly peed my pants I was so excited when I saw thier beautiful faces that have been so lacking in my life.  How I miss them.  Can’t wait until January!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m also excited about this.  How sweet is that?? I mean, really, what mom wouldn’t love this?

Oh, and I can’t forget this. Who can ever forget about Jack??

And this is exciting too…

the great es-cah-pay!

Much to my relief, I got outta the house yesterday!  We dropped Charlotte off at Grandma’s house and went to the mall.  We looked around, played with toys, and just laughed.  Then we went back to Grandma’s, ate dinner, started watching a movie (Bone Daddy, we stopped it b/c it was awful and stupid. Does anyone know who the killer was??), then brought Charlotte home to go to bed.  Once she was in bed, we did what any young married couple would do … answered questions on Yahoo Answers.  That was fun, and then we looked at www.icanhascheezburger.com and www.ihasahotdog.com and the other LOL sites.  We laughed so hard we both got tummy cramps!

Thanks for all the comments yesterday, its always nice to know that you aren’t just crazy!  We can all be crazy together!

so much and so little

I didn’t leave the house at all yesterday.  And I won’t be leaving the house tomorrow.  That’s just how my Thursdays and Saturdays are.  So I desperately want to get out of the house today.  Friday is Jamie’s day off, so we usually do something fun.  But the playset people are here power-washing, so we have to stay until they leave.  And there are so many things I want to do, but I feel like I’m tied down because every 3 hours I have to stop, sit down for an hour to feed Charlotte, burp her, and get her changed. Which really only leaves a 2 hour window to do something in, but before I can do something I need to interact and play with Charlotte, after all, isn’t that my job??. So I’m left with about an hour to an hour and a half to get something done.

I want to rearrange my bedroom. I want to set up my craft closet.  I want to start my coupon binder.  I want to start and finish one of my sewing projects.  I don’t want to clean the house. I don’t want to do laundry.  I want the dogs to be outside b/c they smell.  I want to swing on my swingset.  I want to go for a lovely walk through the woods.  I want to take a long shower.  I want to sit outside and read a book.  I don’t want to be inside the house.

But here I am. I feed Charlotte again in 45 minutes, but she’ll probably wake up in another 15 minutes … so the long shower idea is out the window again.  Don’t get me wrong, I love being a stay home mommy, I really do.  I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.  But today I am just antsy and want to scream.  Ever have a day like that?  What did you do?

PS- I really want this.

pictures of the playset and other funny news

The playset people came out today and got the beast set up.  They are coming back tomorrow to power-wash, stain, and install the slide, swings, and climbing ramp.  But here is the process so far…

Cousin Kristen couldn’t come over today with the boys, they are all battling some symptoms of the yucky.  But I did get to watch A League Of Their Own, one of my all time favorite movies.  It was great timing too, because I’m looking at hairstyles from the 1940’s for the Christmas Extravaganza!

Something else that was funny today… Charlotte has been practicing taking her pacifier out of her mouth and putting it back in.  I was singing her Jingle Bells and she suddenly took her pacifier out and stuck it in my mouth.  Haha!  I don’t know if she was enjoying the song so much that she wanted to thank me by sharing her paci, or if she was trying to shut me up.  Its hard to say.  But it was hilarious either way.

playgrounds and friends

Today is an exciting day.  Today is the day that the playset is being delivered. Yeah, believe me, I know that Charlotte is way too young to play on it.  But Grandaddy Jim had to get her one.  Her life just wouldn’t be complete without it.  It will be spring before she can use anything on it (like the special infant swing accessory).  But it will be so awesome when she is big enough to use it.  Until then, I’ll just have to test out the swings for her LOL.  So that is being delivered today, and they will come back and stain it tomorrow.  Since Jamie has Staff Devotions on Thursday mornings, my dad (Grandaddy Jim) is coming out to be here when they deliver the beast.  I hope my mommy comes with him so she can help me get the sewing machine that I “acquired” from her garage set up and running!

Also happening today… my cousin Kristen is bringing Wilson and Cooper out for a little visit.  This is building up to be quite an exciting day.  And Thursdays are usually pretty boring!
