CPSIA Legislation

I usually try to name my posts something clever.  But this time I wanted to make sure that it would come up in a Google search for this topic.  Yes, my opinion is that important. LOL.

I just got an email today about the CPSIA (Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act).  They were put in place in response to all the crappy stuff that China was sending us.  It is necessary, but they have started taking it a little far.  By February 10 they are going to require all products for children 12 & under to be independently tested.  This testing would cost up to $4000 a piece (like each cute little teddy bear or baby onesie has to undergo $4k testing)!! Which means that awesome sites like etsy.com would quickly go outta business!  And forget about buying second-hand stuff on eBay or Craigslist, or GoodWill for that matter… that’s gonna be taken out too!

If you are like me and heart handmade goodies and second hand treasures, here is some more info and some things you can do…

Here are some articles/blogs explaining in more detail:

What you can do:
Write to your Congressperson: https://writerep.house.gov/writerep/welcome.shtml
Write to your Senators: http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm
Write to the CPSC (they do not have the authority to change the law, but have some leeway in how they enforce it): http://www.cpsc.gov/cgibin/newleg.aspx
The Handmade Toy Alliance has a sample letter here: http://www.handmadetoyalliance.org/how-you-can-help
Post about this on your blog or webpage, if you have one. Spread the word!

  1. I will DEFINITELY post this on my own blog. I heart handmade goodies also & this seems like an oxymoron to me. If you are an individual trying to avoid the potential dangers of toys, etc. made in China, it seems that your concerns & care would LEAD you to purchasing off of sites like Etsy! Can one more thing be done out of complete ignorance in this government? All of the education these people have under their belt & it seems as though the average housewife has more sense!

  2. Please visit savekidsresale.com CPSC came out with a press release yesterday which they indicated would absolve the resale industry, but yet, it doesn’t… The CPSC’s press release is basically an attempt to imply that shop owners become bootleggers. No different really from Prohibition. Liquor was illegal, government mostly looked the other way ignoring the speak easy’s, but the cops
could still arrest you and throw you in jail if the anti-liquor crowd made a stink to local law enforcement. Prohibition was repealed as we know – it took a little while.

Don’t you find it curious that not one of our state or federal officials have gone on TV in person to address the issue?

Please consider visiting the savekidsresale.com and sign the petition and send e-mail to congress.

  3. This law has passed and will take effect unless repealed. It has already caused many of us to scale down our business. I have had to let go 2 employees. Most of us work 6 months in advance. I won’t be showing my Fall line because when it comes time to ship it, I won’t be able to fund the testing.

Until then, you can send it off to test with XRF gun. It is affordable for some. If you make one of a kind or just 2 or 3 times; it is not.

I would love to put my head in the sand and hope it does not pass but my stores will not take a shipment without the testing.
